The Close Combat Assault Ration (CCAR) is a compact, high-energy, eat-on-the-move field ration designed to support today’s highly mobile, small-unit combat operations. Built for extended missions in austere environments, CCAR provides dense, balanced nutrition while significantly reducing weight and volume, allowing warfighters to move faster, carry more mission-critical gear, and remain self-sustained for longer periods without resupply.

The development of the CCAR grew out of the same practical realities that once led soldiers to field-strip their MREs, but applied to a new operational problem. As missions evolved, it became clear that existing individual rations, including the MRE and the First Strike Ration, were still too bulky for operations requiring small units to operate independently for five days or more. Warfighters needed more nutrition in less space, without sacrificing performance, acceptability, or ease of consumption. 

Rather than relying solely on snack-based components, CCAR was engineered using warfighter feedback and modern food science to deliver higher energy density in a smaller footprint. By increasing nutrient density and reformulating existing MRE components, developers were able to provide five days of nutrition in a package smaller and lighter than three days of First Strike Rations. Compared to the FSR, CCAR achieves approximately 39% reduction in volume and 17% reduction in weight, directly translating to increased mobility and reduced combat load.

Unlike traditional field stripping, which reduced bulk at the cost of wasted food and lower caloric intake, CCAR was purpose-built to ensure optimal consumption. All components are ready to eat as-is, require no added water, and can be consumed on the move. Entrées are packaged for rapid access, allowing warfighters to maintain energy intake during sustained operations without stopping to prepare meals.

The CCAR represents the next evolution of assault rations: one that reflects the realities of modern expeditionary warfare. It preserves the core philosophy that made the First Strike Ration successful, while applying new technologies and lessons learned to meet the demands of longer, more isolated missions. Compact, efficient, and mission-focused, CCAR is designed to fuel performance when mobility and endurance matter most.
